NATURAL DYE & NON-TOXIC DYE

The Colour Behind the Fabric

Colour is more than just a finish. It is part of the character of the fabric.

For our Embody Collection, we work with two different dyeing approaches: Natural Dye and Non-Toxic Dye. Each process creates its own unique qualities, from the way the colour settles into the fabric to how it naturally changes over time.

Because of this, no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Slight variations in colour, tone, and texture are part of the beauty of the dyeing process and make each garment uniquely its own.

Natural Dye

Natural dyeing uses colour derived from natural sources such as plants, flowers, roots, leaves, bark, fruits, and other botanical materials.

The colour is carefully extracted and transferred onto the fabric through a slower, more hands-on process. Depending on the natural material used, the final colour can vary slightly from one dye bath to another

What happens to the fabric?

Natural dyes tend to create softer, more organic tones. The colour may appear slightly uneven or have subtle variations across the fabric. This is not considered a flaw — it is a natural characteristic of botanical dyeing.

Over time, natural-dyed fabric may gently fade, soften, or shift in tone when exposed to sunlight, washing, air, and everyday wear.

This means your garment may slowly develop its own character as you wear it

What to expect ?

When you choose a naturally dyed piece, you can expect:

  • Subtle variations in colour and tone

  • A softer, more organic colour appearance

  • Possible colour transfer during the first few washes

  • Gradual fading or colour changes over time

  • A unique finish that may differ slightly from the product photos

These changes are part of the natural life of the garment.

Non-toxic dyeing uses dyes selected and processed without intentionally using harmful or highly toxic substances commonly associated with conventional dyeing.

The process allows us to achieve a wider range of consistent colours while keeping our approach more conscious of the people involved in the making process and the environment.

Compared to natural dyes, non-toxic dyes generally provide better colour consistency and can offer greater resistance to everyday washing and wear.

Non-Toxic Dye

The colour is usually more even and consistent across the fabric. The final shade may also remain more stable over time compared to natural dye.

However, colour may still gradually soften or fade with repeated washing, prolonged sunlight exposure, friction, and everyday use.

A small difference between batches can also occur because fabric, dye baths, and production conditions can naturally vary.

What happens to the fabric?

With a non-toxic dyed piece, you can expect:

  • More consistent and even colour

  • Better colour stability

  • A softer change in colour over prolonged use

  • Minor variations between production batches

  • Natural wear and fading over time

The fabric will continue to change with you, but generally in a more gradual and consistent way.

Natural Dye vs. Non-Toxic Dye

Both dyeing processes have their own character.

  • Natural Dye

More organic, subtle, and naturally varied. Colours can gently evolve over time, creating a lived-in and unique appearance.

  • Non-Toxic Dye

More consistent and stable, while still allowing the fabric to naturally soften and change through wear.

Neither process is designed to create a perfectly uniform colour forever. Fabric is a living material, and its colour will respond to how it is worn, washed, and cared for.

Whether your Embody piece is naturally dyed or non-toxic dyed, gentle care will help preserve the fabric and its colour for longer.

Wash gently

Hand wash or use a gentle machine cycle with cold water. Avoid hot water, as heat can encourage colour loss and may affect the natural fibres.

Use a mild detergent

Choose a gentle, preferably biodegradable detergent. Avoid bleach, harsh stain removers, and strong chemicals.

Wash separately

Especially for natural-dyed garments, we recommend washing separately or with similar colours during the first few washes, as some excess colour may be released.

Avoid prolonged sunlight

Dry your garment in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Direct and prolonged sunlight can gradually fade dyed fabrics.

Do not wring

Gently press out excess water instead of twisting or wringing the fabric. This helps protect the fibres and maintain the shape of the garment.

Store thoughtfully

Make sure the garment is completely dry before storing. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.

Let It Age Naturally

Your Embody piece is designed to be worn, lived in, and enjoyed.

With time, the colour may become softer, the fabric may become more relaxed, and small changes may appear through regular wear. These are not imperfections, they are signs that the garment has become part of your everyday life.

We believe beauty doesn't have to stay exactly the same.

Let the colour change
Let the fabric soften
Let the piece become yours
